Autumn in Argentina

Due to its southern hemisphere location, autumn in Argentina runs from March to May - perfect for an easter break. Autumn is perhaps the best time to travel in Argentina, with the temperatures dropping to a more temperate heat and the beautiful colours of nature are out in full force. If you're interested in the best places to go and things to see in autumn in Argentina, read on and discover what wonders await you in the charming country.

Patagonia is one of the most beautiful areas of Argentina in the autumn. It is full of national parks and forests, which in the autumn, glow with yellows, oranges, and reds. The peaks of the mountains will remain snowy, and the evergreens will retain their rich green, making for a breath taking spectrum of natural colour to explore on hikes, trails, and horse treks. One highlight of the Patagonia region is the Tierra del Fuego, an archipelago at the very bottom of the continent. Often called "the end of the world", Tierra del Fuego is a jumping off point for many travellers to Antarctica. The islands themselves, windswept and filled with mountains, moorland, forests, and rocky beaches, and populated with birdlife, livestock, and of course, local people, are best seen in the autumn months, before it gets too cold in the winter.

One of Argentina's most famous destinations is the Iguazu Falls. These make up the largest waterfall system in the world. The Iguazu falls are in the humid rainforest, so visiting in the autumn is the best time, when temperatures are at a more bearable heat. The falls are part of the Iguazu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are on the border between Brazil and Argentina. We might be biased, but we think the best way to view the falls is from the Argentine side - it is more accessible and offers fantastic views.

In fact, many areas of Argentina are often considered too hot to visit in the summertime come into their own in the autumn. Highlights include the Iberá Wetlands, where alligators and capybaras roam free; The Humahuaca Gorge, another UNESCO World Heritage site home to other-worldly coloured hills and arid desert land; Mendoza, the most important wine region in the country, whose vineyards look their finest in autumn.

Argentina's cities are bustling and vibrant places to be all year round, but Buenos Aires really comes to life in the autumn. The city is filled with trees and parks, which of course look beautiful in the autumn sun. Nature aside, autumn brings many exciting events to get involved with in Buenos Aires: the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema takes place in April, followed by the ArteBA arts festival in May, plus many of the most important football matches happen in the autumn in Buenos Aires.
