Equestrian Disciplines

Here at pampeano, we owe our origins and our heritage to the polo fields of South America. Polo as a sport is a magnificent test of skill, teamwork and horsemanship, deservedly known as The Sport of Kings, and we are passionate about the game. However, pampeano is by no means limited to either polo or Argentina. In the Journal this week we take a look at some of our greatest advocates from around the world, and across multiple equestrian disciplines.

Australian show jumping

A rising star in Australian show jumping is 18 year old eventer, Hannah Lucy Hardy.  An avid vlogger, Hannah brings together her talent for film making and riding  with regular posts on YouTube. Follow her riding life at HannahLucy and TheEventerVlogs on Youtube. Hannah regularly reviews her favourite pampeano polo belts – see what she had to say here

American show jumping

Amongst our many equestrian followers in the USA is Jennifer Simms, a show jumper and fashionista from Los Angeles. Jennifer is the founder of StyledEquestrian.com, an equestrian fashion blog featuring the latest trends in equestrian fashion and some amazing styling tips; Jennifer loves her Sereno polo belt so much she doesn’t just save it for the saddle!  Here she teams it with some skinny white jeans and a classic blue tee – stunning against the gorgeous blue backdrop of sea and sky in sunny California.

Show Jumping: accuracy and skill

The sport of show jumping is designed to be a true test for horse and rider. The aim is to make it around a course of fences clear (without dropping any rails) and inside the optimum time. Horses and riders incur penalties by knocking down fences (four penalties), refusing (four penalties), falling (elimination) or exceeding the time allowed (one penalty for every four seconds commenced).

While it may sound simple, show jumping requires extreme amounts of athleticism and precision. A show jumping course will be made up of anywhere between, on average, 10-15 fences not including combinations. The type of fences and terrain in a show jumping course will vary depending on the level.

Horses and riders who jump their first round clear will be able to continue to the “jump off.” In the jump off, the course is shortened and the horse and rider that completes the course the fastest and with the least amount of penalties wins the competition.

 American Grand Prix riding

Sophie St.Clair, a young show jumper from Southern California, is another US champion of pampeano. At just 16 Sophie is an aspiring professional Grand Prix rider who has already made her mark on the local equestrian scene. When she’s not competing, Sophie uses her skills as a writer for Sidelines Magazine, Horse & Style Magazine and West Palms Events. Follow Sophie and her life on the show circuit at www.sophiestclair.tumblr.com, or Instagram @sophiesaintclair.

British eventing

Eventing brings together the three disciplines of Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping into one combined event, sometimes completed during a single day (commonly at lower level eventing) but more usually held over three days. With the breadth of skills required to compete successfully, eventing is often seen as the ultimate equestrian challenge.

These events are closely governed by the FEI (International Equestrian Federation). The FEI rules are very specific about the dressage test; the height and spread of cross-country obstacles and the speed and distance of the course; and the speed, height and spread of the show-jumping course.

The various levels of eventing are classified by a star rating, with four-star being the ultimate challenge.  There are only six of these four-star events in the world: Rolex, USA; Badminton and Burghley, United Kingdom; Luhmühlen, Germany; Pau, France; and Adelaide, Australia.

In the UK there are also a number of two-star and three-star competitions, which are fantastic spectator events, including Blenheim (Oxfordshire), Bramham (Yorkshire), Blair Castle (Scotland) and Gatcombe (Gloucestershire).

If you want to try your hand at eventing, contact British Eventing for more information, and details of local competitions, britisheventing.com

Badminton horse trials

Badminton is the highlight of the British eventing calendar and is one of only 6 events worldwide classified as four star – the ultimate eventing challenge.  For other major eventing venues in the UK, see the calendar below.

Eventing is a great spectator sport and provides be a fun day out for all the family. Dogs are welcome, and the major eventing competitions will have refreshments, children's entertainment and country shopping galore. Pack a picnic, don your wellies and your favourite pampeano polo belt, and don’t forget to share your photos with us on Instagram or Facebook #mypampeano
